Artist Statement

Art builds community, connections, and inspires discourse and creativity. A collaborative project can be challenging but is such a rewarding and priceless experience even before the end product is put together. This collaborative project will have contributions from local potters of various skill and experience levels with a variety of messages and images for our community.

"Art pulls a community together... Art makes you feel differently. That's what artists are doing all the time, shifting and changing the way you see life.” - Lister Sinclair “The purpose of art is to stop time” - Bob Dylan

About the “Tiles of Time” Installation

Tiles of Time is a collaborative art installation created by local ceramic artists. It consists of individual ceramic tiles installed on treated wood panels that form an open phone booth/Tardis-like structure.

Each artist created a single tile or set of hand built tiles made of fired stoneware clay. The tiles are approximately 6”x6”, decorated on the surface with relief and incised designs that can be patterned, decorative, or inspired by the natural and architectural elements in Leesburg. The tiles were fired in the kiln, then stained or accent glazed, and then glaze fired to withstand the elements. Spray sealant was applied to protect against the elements. Each tile is mounted on cement backer board with mortar and grouted and sealed. The boards are then mounted to wood panels that will attach to a 3 wall base structure that surrounds the viewer and invites closer interaction.
